Chapter Eight

Mac and Tim halted their steps when they heard a voice. Simultaneously, the two men switched off the lantern lights. They were just steps away from the wall outside the large storage area. The male voice was measured. A touch of cruelty reached Mac’s ears. He and Tim recognized Evan Steckler’s tone. It sounded as if a belt buckle thumped against one of the metal trunks. Evan either was nervous, or the action was meant to intimidate his hostage. Mac knew who the victim was. He waited to hear Brenda’s voice, but only Evan spoke.

“Did you know I come from a family of talented actors and actresses, Brenda? Did you know you allowed the most famous one of all to be murdered in her own bed right here in your bed and breakfast?”

Brenda didn’t answer. Mac hoped she was still capable of doing so and had chosen to remain silent.

“Ellen Teague was so well-known that audiences demanded her plays to reach their towns and cities everywhere. Even in Europe, she was in demand. Do you know where she would be today if you had kept her safe from harm?”

Mac finally released his breath when he heard his wife’s muffled words. “Ellen chose the room she occupied, Evan. She wanted that room because of the short hallway that connected to her assistant. I had no idea that Chester Boyd had his own ambitions.”

Evan’s footsteps paced back and forth. Then a second person spoke. “Evan is right, Brenda. You are responsible for Ellen’s death. Chester should never have had access like that to her.” Tracy sounded calmer than her husband. Mac hesitated to go further into the room. He had no idea who else may have sneaked into the attic.

Bryce and William stepped quietly up the stairs to the landing. Tim turned and signaled for them to stop.

“You seem to think of everything else, Brenda. Everything except security around here. Someone as famous as Ellen Teague should have been surrounded with security.” Evan’s voice grew louder. “She was my aunt, Brenda. Did you know that when you saw us walk through your front door? She doted on me. I was the only person around her that she trusted. She called me to tell me she was getting tired of Chester lurking all the time. She considered hiring me to be her protector. And you let that monster strangle her to death.”

Mac heard the belt buckle snap against the metal trunk again. He wanted to call to Brenda to reassure her. It was something he couldn’t risk until the right moment. He had to be sure that only Tracy and Evan were in the attic. He had no idea where Boxer or Rex were at this point. He had presumed Bryce was keeping an eye on Rex, and yet, his young detective was standing on the landing below him.

Tim and Mac grew cold when Evan’s next words spewed from his mouth. “How do you think it will feel to suffer the way Ellen did?”

“There was nothing I could do about it, Evan,” Brenda said.
